The Marvels Wins the Box Office But Has the Worst MCU Opening Weekend of All Time

While The Marvels may have won the domestic weekend box office, it also had the worst MCU opening of all time with ticket sales of $47.0 million.

As reported by Comscore, The Marvels’ performance places it below The Incredible Hulk’s $55.4 million, Ant-Man’s $57.2 million, and Captain America: The First Avenger’s $65.0 million.

At the international box office, The Marvels, which is the 33rd MCU film, brought in $63.3 million. Combined with the North American total, this amounts to a global debut of $110.3 million.

For comparison, Captain Marvel opened in 2019 with an estimated $153 million domestically, an additional $302 million internationally, and a worldwide total of $455 million. It ended its theatrical run with a global tally of $426.8 million.

Projections initially had The Marvels tracking to earn between $75 to $80 million, but it recently fell to $60 to $65 million. There are many factors that led to this, obviously, but one was due to the film’s stars, like Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, and Samuel L. Jackson, being unable to promote the film because of the now-ended actors’ strike.

On Rotten Tomatoes, The Marvels is currently sitting at 62%, which is only above Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s 46% and Eternals’ 47% in the entire MCU. The audience score, however, is currently sitting at 84%

We here at IGN called The Marvels a “triumph” in our review.

“Its depth can be seen not just through its characters, but through its story as it explores war’s complicated fallout; the difficulty of being a human when you are perceived as a monolith; and the hilarious and complicated virtues of family,” IGN’s Amelia Emberwing continued. “Both funny and heartfelt, Nia DaCosta’s MCU debut will have you asking when she and her leading ladies are coming back immediately after the credits roll. It’s a pity that the villain isn’t given much to do, though.”

Elsewhere in box office news, Five Nights at Freddy’s placed second with $9 million, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour took third place with $5.9 million, Priscilla landed at fourth with $4.7 million, and Killers of the Flower Moon rounded out the top five with $4.6 million.
