The Marvels director Nia DaCosta discusses the intense pressure she faced when taking on the responsibility of helming a big-budget superhero sequel that continues multiple storylines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At a panel in Glastonbury called “How to Save Cinema,” DaCosta expressed her initial hesitation in directing the sequel to Captain Marvel. WGTC’s David James, who was in the audience, exclusively shares DaCosta’s revelation. However, after learning that the sequel would also involve characters like Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau, whom she admires, DaCosta decided to pitch her ideas and ultimately secured the job.

“It’s funny because when I first heard about Captain Marvel 2, I was hesitant because she wasn’t really my favorite. But I love Marvel, so I was open to seeing what else was happening. Then they mentioned it involved not only Captain Marvel, but also Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau, characters I’ve always admired. I had worked with Teyonah [Parris] on Candyman, so I was even more intrigued. I pitched my ideas and thankfully got the job. However, in a meeting with Kevin [Feige], he informed me that it’s essentially a sequel to five different things. That’s when I thought, ‘How did I end up with this incredibly challenging job?’ It’s both a great opportunity and very stressful.”

As a Marvel fan myself, I’m highly anticipating the release of The Marvels on November 10. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of 2019’s Captain Marvel, I still appreciated Brie Larson’s performance. The fact that the film serves as a sequel to not only that movie but also the fantastic Disney Plus shows Ms. Marvel and WandaVision is definitely cause for celebration. Additionally, DaCosta’s remake of Candyman was incredibly impressive.

During the same panel, DaCosta also shared her experience working with Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani and her thoughts on director Martin Scorsese’s criticism of Marvel movies. Be sure to check our website for more on those stories.
