The Lack of Recognition: Star Trek’s Overlooked Status as the First Shared Universe

The Star Trek franchise has been pioneering crossovers since its early days, pre-dating the MCU, DCEU, Star Wars, and other contemporary franchises. Season 2 of Strange New Worlds will mark another groundbreaking moment for the franchise, as animated characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks will make their live-action debut, joining Captain Pike and his crew on a new adventure.

However, despite its rich history of interconnectivity, why does Star Trek not receive recognition as the original shared universe? We had the opportunity to interview the actors and producers of Strange New Worlds on the subject of the Trek Cinematic Universe. Let’s delve into the extensive lore of Star Trek crossovers and how they have contributed to the franchise’s growth and development over the years!

Of course, there will always be debates about what truly constitutes a cinematic universe and which should be considered the first of its kind. If we focus solely on movies and TV shows, excluding comics, books, and radio dramas, there were early examples of ongoing franchises like the James Bond films and the Planet of the Apes movies, even though the term “shared universe” may not have been commonly used at that time.

According to Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, Star Trek was not the first shared universe. As with many nerdy topics, the devil is in the details. Going back even further than Bond, Apes, or Trek, we discover the Universal horror movies and the Godzilla series.

However, the undeniable fact is that Star Trek: The Original Series led to the creation of Star Trek movies, which then paved the way for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and so on. Every iteration of the franchise was intricately connected to one another, continuing right up to the modern shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds.

Join us in watching the full video as we contemplate why Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek deserves more recognition as the precursor to the shared universe concept…
