The Introduction of Lex Luthor in Season 3 of ‘Superman & Lois’ Was Unnecessary

Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 3 of Superman & Lois. In the CW’s popular show Superman & Lois, Clark Kent and Lois Lane, now in a committed relationship, leave Metropolis to start afresh in Smallville with their twin sons, Jon and Jordan. However, their small-town life quickly becomes anything but peaceful. Smallville becomes a hotspot for supervillain activity, with threats from characters like Tal-Rho and Ally Allston putting the world at risk. In Season 3, the introduction of Lex Luthor brings yet another formidable enemy: Doomsday. While some may be excited about Lex Luthor’s inclusion, others may have reservations.

One of the main reasons we lack enthusiasm about Lex Luthor joining Superman & Lois is his overuse in previous live-action adaptations. We’ve seen him in many different iterations, and there’s little left to explore with the character. He’s the typical egotistical billionaire genius who manipulates everyone around him. We’ve already seen this dynamic play out in the show with Lex controlling people in Stryker’s prison and manipulating Bizarro Superman. His constant presence can become tiresome and overshadow other important aspects of the series.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Lex Luthor, played by Jon Cryer, dominated the final seasons of Supergirl, which left viewers exhausted and potentially tainted the character. His tricks and abilities to manipulate others have become predictable and cliché. Additionally, the introduction of an alternate version of Lex, who has been in prison for years and has a daughter, may offer a slight twist to the character, but it might not be enough to rejuvenate our interest in yet another Superman/Lex showdown.

Instead, Superman & Lois should focus on introducing unexpected and underused villains. The decision not to make Wolé Park’s character Lex Luthor was a relief, as it allowed the show to explore other iconic DC villains. For example, the inclusion of Onomatopoeia and the transformation of Bizarro Superman added depth to the story and showcased different aspects of the Man of Steel. Turning the character into Doomsday was an unexpected twist that kept viewers engaged.

Each season of Superman & Lois has introduced new and intriguing villains like Tal-Rho, Ally Allston, and Bruno Mannheim. These fresh faces added depth to the Superman lore and created a unique narrative for the show. It’s refreshing to see Superman face enemies that challenge him in different ways and showcase his abilities as a hero, rather than relying on the familiar foe of Lex Luthor.

Unfortunately, it seems that Lex will play a large role in Season 4, which has come at the cost of cutting beloved characters from the main cast. Losing these characters and shifting the focus to Lex will undoubtedly change the tone of the show and potentially detract from what made it enjoyable. It’s disheartening to see characters like John Henry Irons being sacrificed in favor of yet another Lex Luthor storyline. There are countless other villains to explore that could bring fresh and unpredictable challenges for Clark and Lois.

In conclusion, while some may be excited about Lex Luthor’s inclusion in Superman & Lois, others have reservations due to his overuse in previous adaptations. Introducing unexpected and underused villains can keep the show engaging and allow for character growth. Losing beloved characters to make room for more Lex Luthor may not be the best choice. Superman & Lois should focus on exploring new narratives and testing the superheroes in unforeseen ways.

The first two seasons of Superman & Lois are currently available to stream on Max.
