CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077: From Infamy to Redemption
The rise and fall, and subsequent rise, of CD Projekt Red’s game, Cyberpunk 2077, has become one of the defining stories of this gaming era. While the developer has been diligently releasing updates to fix and patch the game’s major issues, the release in December 2020 still leaves a bitter taste for many players.
Fortunately, the game has made significant improvements since then. However, Michał Platkow-Gilewski, the studio’s VP of PR and Communication, openly admitted in a recent interview with Gamesindustry.biz that the initial launch of the game was actually received better than it was perceived. Platkow-Gilewski stated, “I truly believe that Cyberpunk, at its launch, was better than its negative reception. Even the initial reviews were positive. The negative sentiment spread like wildfire, leading us from being heroes to zeroes in no time. It was a challenging moment, and we weren’t sure what was happening. We always knew the game was great, and we acknowledged that we could improve it, take the necessary time, and rebuild certain aspects.”
In summary, Platkow-Gilewski remains positive about the studio’s massive RPG, despite the contrasting narrative from two and a half years ago. He reveals that the team responded by rolling up their sleeves and dedicating themselves to fixing the game.
A Focus on Work-Life Balance
Furthermore, CD Projekt Red seems to be making efforts to reduce their crunch culture, which received significant criticism following the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. In the same interview, Platkow-Gilewski mentions that the studio is striving for a more balanced approach. He explains that there is now a team specifically dedicated to improving work-life balance.
“We are constantly improving, reshaping, and rebuilding the studio on multiple levels, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly what is happening,” Platkow-Gilewski elaborates. “However, we are committed to enhancing work-life balance, team collaboration, empowering smaller teams, refining our pipelines, and improving communication with management.”
Hopefully, this shift in focus will be beneficial for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming projects, including a new saga within The Witcher universe and a sequel to Cyberpunk. Additionally, players can anticipate the release of the game’s first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, on September 26, 2023, which could mark a significant turning point for the state of Cyberpunk.
