The Finale of ‘Never Have I Ever’ Was Too Easy to Anticipate

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t seen the season finale of Never Have I Ever, proceed with caution. Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling’s Netflix hit teen series had fans convinced that Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) would get a happy ending, and they weren’t wrong. However, despite everything going perfectly right, the show’s final episode left us with an odd taste in our mouths. The problem wasn’t that fans were expecting something wild or out of character; in fact, it was the opposite. Never Have I Ever could have dared to do more with its final episode. The way things wrapped up was not only predictable for viewers but for Devi as well. Wasn’t this the same show that constantly teaches viewers about the importance of learning how to deal with frustration?

The finale was somewhat rushed and had a lot to wrap up. There were weddings, announcements, and decisions, but it all felt too smooth. Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) changing her mind about attending Princeton and choosing Howard all but erased Devi and her friend’s past mistakes. Devi didn’t get properly punished for being arrogant about her college applications. Even Nalini’s (Poorna Jagannathan) terrible actions towards Margot (Victoria Moroles) didn’t have any real consequences.

This is problematic because Never Have I Ever has always been about teaching its fans and its characters important lessons about growing up. The show had the perfect opportunity to teach Devi and its fans something about life’s disappointments, but it failed to do so. Instead, Kaling and Fisher gave the character everything she wanted, even down to the university of her dreams. A more honest ending would have been to have Devi lose something, maybe her chance at Princeton or her connections to home.

In conclusion, it feels like the final season of Never Have I Ever wanted to teach a lesson about mistakes having consequences, but it also wanted those consequences not to matter. It wanted to prepare its characters for the real world while protecting them from hardship. The show could have taken the opportunity to say something about frustration and losing the things we want, but it chose not to. In the end, it feels like the show wanted to have its cake and eat it too.
