It is estimated that there will be 25 billion Internet-connected devices in the U.S. by 2030, according to the FCC. Now the FCC wants to make sure that these devices will be secure so you can have peace of mind when buying that wi-fi connected security camera or baby monitor.
“The device I think of most when I think about this new world of the internet of things and, maybe it is because I am a mom, is a baby monitor,” said Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel during last week’s Commission meeting, according to a report from Telecompetitor. “You want that to be safe. You want to know when you bring that monitor into your house to watch your newborn that the connection is secure.”
To help make these devices more secure, the FCC is creating a program of security requirements that would let products meeting those standards display a “U.S. Cyber Trust Mark.” This mark will show that these products have put in place security measures to keep them safe.
This program will be voluntary, but companies would need to take certain steps to use the mark to show they are secure by FCC standards.
Recent reports show many Internet-connected devices have weak security allowing outsiders to quickly access them. This new standard should help prevent that from happening in the future for any companies that wish to get their devices certified.
