The Directors of the Summer’s Biggest Breakout Horror Hit Address Sequel Possibilities

Not only did A24 win all five major Oscar categories this year and comply with SAG-AFTRA’s demands, which resulted in interim agreements for filming more movies, but it also went the extra mile by distributing the brilliantly crafted supernatural horror film, Talk to Me. This film stands out in a genre that has been thriving since last year.

With its expert blend of possession horror and social satire, Talk to Me follows a group of teenagers who discover a severed hand that allows them to communicate with ghosts. Instead of running away like any sensible person not in a movie, they embrace it as the next viral trend on social media, with predictable consequences.

Although horror films may not be as prone to franchises like action or superhero films, it wouldn’t hurt to see a follow-up or two for a story like Talk to Me. Especially considering that the directorial brothers, Danny and Michael Philippou (with Danny also contributing to the screenplay), seem to have ideas in the works.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Philippou siblings shared their thoughts on the potential for a sequel, including new set pieces and whether it should focus on the same characters.

“Part of me thinks, ‘Maybe it’s complete.’ The other part of me is like, ‘Oh, my God. Please give me a sequel.’ I have these amazing set pieces that I would love to film. If A24 approached me and said, ‘We want a sequel,’ I wouldn’t be able to resist. I would be so excited to do it.”

“I guess the question is, should we continue the story with Mia and the same characters, or should we explore another part of the world? That’s a debate.”

It’s unusual for A24 to venture into franchises, but considering their successful dive into Ti West’s X trilogy, anything is possible. Perhaps we have unwittingly witnessed the birth of the Talk franchise.

Talk to Me is currently showing in theaters.
