‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Does Not Belong to the ‘Conjuring’ Universe

In a surprising turn of events, director Michael Chaves has clarified that the 2019 film The Curse of La Llorona is not actually part of the continuity of The Conjuring franchise, despite the presence of Annabelle cameos. This revelation dispels previous reports that labeled it as the sixth installment in the franchise. The confusion regarding the film’s placement arose from a misunderstanding during its premiere at the SXSW film festival.

Set in 1973, the movie revolves around the haunting experiences of Anna (played by Linda Cardellini) and her family, who are tormented by the ghostly entity known as La Llorona, a figure from Mexican folklore. The inclusion of a cameo by the haunted doll Annabelle, as well as the appearance of Father Perez (portrayed by Tony Amendola) from the 2014 spin-off, would lead one to believe that the film is firmly situated within the universe of The Conjuring. However, according to Chaves, it is not that straightforward.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly to commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Conjuring, Chaves discussed the film’s connection to the larger franchise and stated, “There’s been so much debate about it, and I think I’ve been evasive in the past. One of the reasons why it couldn’t officially be part of the Conjuring Universe is that it didn’t involve one of the key producers, Peter Safran. The Conjuring is his brainchild, along with James Wan, and they both continue to be the core producers behind it.”

As it turns out, Safran was not involved in La Llorona due to its small budget, but he still gave permission for the character to make an appearance. The inclusion of the cameos was intended to be a hidden treat for fans, but unfortunately, the secret was leaked when the film premiered at SXSW. The presenter mistakenly introduced the movie as the next entry in the Conjuring universe, causing a major mix-up. Safran was quick to emphasize that La Llorona is “not part of The Conjuring universe” and stated, “You can’t count it!”

Wan’s Connection Also Led to the Misunderstanding

The film was produced by James Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, which inadvertently created a misleading association with the franchise. Safran clarified, “It periodically gets lumped in because of Chaves and because of Atomic Monster, but it is not officially part of the universe.” Nonetheless, he commended Chaves for his work on La Llorona and even joked, “By the way, I think Chaves did a great job on the movie, which is why we stole him for the Conjuring universe.”
