The Criterion Channel Unveils New High School Horror Category Featuring These Iconic FIlms

The Big Picture

  • Criterion Channel’s new category, ‘High School Horrors,’ will showcase iconic teen horror films for a spooky back-to-school season.
  • The new promo provides a sneak peek at the chaos ahead with clips from classic high school horror movies like Prom Night and Suspiria.
  • Dive into the nostalgic world of high school nightmares and embrace your inner geek, werewolf, or alien.

It’s time to face another school year, and what’s scarier than high school? The Criterion Channel agrees. To celebrate back to school, they are introducing a new category called ‘High School Horrors’ premiering on September 1. This category will feature iconic high school and teen horror films, providing an opportunity to embrace your inner geek, werewolf, or alien.

A Teenage Nightmare Coming to Your Screen

Prior to the category’s debut, a new promo has been released, giving us a glimpse of the scholastic chaos to come. The promo features spooky music and clips from some of the most iconic high school horror movies of all time. It will surely spark your interest in the back-to-school season. Some of the films showcased in this category include the millennial werewolf cult classic Ginger Snaps, which cleverly compares lycanthropy to teenage girlhood, Dario Argento‘s classic 1977 film Suspiria, and the 1980 slasher classic Prom Night starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

In addition to these films, other titles debuting as part of the new category on September 1 include Massacre at Central High, Slumber Party Massacre, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, The Craft, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, Battle Royale, Donnie Darko, and Battle Royale II: Requiem. Furthermore, the 2014 film Unfriended by Levan Gabriadze will be added to the channel on October 16.

The new channel offers a delightfully frightening combination of high school nostalgia and Halloween preparation. While pumpkin spice lattes are still on the distant horizon and it’s too hot for your favorite chunky knit sweater, you can immerse yourself in the spooky world of K-12 education. Films like Robert Rodriguez‘s The Faculty, which adds an alien twist to the usual high school miseries, will help you ease into the Halloween season.

The Criterion Channel is a paid streaming service that presents exceptional films from around the world. It is brought to you by The Criterion Collection, an organization dedicated to restoring, licensing, and distributing culturally significant films. The new ‘High School Horrors’ category, featuring the best (and worst) of high school, will debut on September 1, 2023. In the meantime, you can enjoy the new promo below.
