Michael Keaton was all set to begin filming Batman in late 1988 with his co-star, Sean Young, when a sudden change of events occurred just days prior to production.

Sean Young, famous for her role as the female lead in Blade Runner alongside Harrison Ford, had been cast as Vicki Vale and had already spent five weeks in pre-production. However, a minor accident during her hobby practice led to a significant shift in her career trajectory.

According to Robert Wuhl, who portrayed reporter Alexander Knox in the film, in the documentary series Shadows of the Bat, “Vicki Vale was originally Sean Young. It wasn’t Kim Basinger.”

In the same documentary, Chris Kenny, co-producer of the film, explained, “Sean Young was there. She was there for four or five weeks of pre-production, and Sean wanted to go practice her horse riding but fell off, and we were about a week away from shooting.”

Interestingly, Sean Young herself appeared in the documentary to share her perspective on the incident. Reflecting on her missed opportunity, she revealed a bittersweet realization, demonstrating her maturity in handling the situation.

Regarding the horse riding accident and her broken arm, she expressed, “I couldn’t hang on. I just couldn’t hang on, and there’s kind of a poetic symbolism about that.”

She further elaborated on how her career took a different path due to the accident:

“In a way, I look back at that particular time in my life and I go, ‘Wow, I wish I’d been able to hang on to that horse.’ I wish I’d been able to do that because then the turning point in my particular career I would’ve been able to stay on the film, I would’ve been in a big box office hit, I would’ve been able to go on to other big box office hits and then, you know, that kind of domino effect would have occurred in my career. That was the turning point in my career where that didn’t happen.”

Following the accident, the producers of Batman had to scramble to find a replacement actress for the role. Chris Kenny described the situation, saying, “At the time, it was kind of a panic to recast her.”

Director Tim Burton, the producers, and the studio held discussions to determine who would be the new Vicki Vale. However, due to the limited availability of actresses who could quickly travel to London and commence filming, options were scarce.

Fortunately, Kim Basinger emerged as a suitable candidate who was available and willing to take on the role. Basinger, a model turned actress, had gained recognition in Hollywood for her performance in Robert Benson’s 1987 film Nadine. Little did she know that she was about to co-star in the highest-grossing film of her career.

In the documentary, Basinger expresses her gratitude for the opportunity and describes her experience on set as more than just a film, but an unforgettable journey.

In the following year, Sean Young was cast opposite Warren Beatty in Dick Tracy, but she was ultimately fired. The reason given was that she was not considered maternal enough for the role. Young later alleged that she was dismissed because Beatty made unwelcome advances towards her, which she did not reciprocate. Beatty denied the claims.

Sean Young attempted to secure the role of Catwoman in the 1992 Batman sequel, Batman Returns. She made an appearance on the Joan Rivers Show dressed as Catwoman in an effort to grab Tim Burton’s attention and campaign for the role. However, Michelle Pfeiffer was ultimately chosen for the part.

In 1992, Young starred in the Miramax film Love Crimes, where she alleged that Harvey Weinstein exposed himself to her. Unsurprisingly, Young did not respond favorably to Weinstein, and the incident resulted in her never working with Miramax again. She claims that her career took a downward spiral after rejecting Weinstein’s advances. Weinstein denies the allegations.

Sean Young’s career has been fraught with frustrations, many of which were influenced by the decisions and actions of others.
