The best from April 2024

Out of all the new games released on Android in March 2024, Wildfrost stood out thanks to its fresh take on the deck builder genre. However, we couldn’t possibly leave out the cute simulation game Hamster Inn, and the latest incarnation of Dadish has made the jump to 3D; plus, Square Enix released a full-fledged JRPG at full price, which is certainly worth a mention. Whatever games you like, there’s something perfect for you this month.

Genre
Digital Card Game

Deck-building games are a dime-a-dozen on the Play Store, so it takes something extraordinary to stand out from the crowd. Wildfrost doesn’t revolutionize the genre but nails the essentials, so you feel every decision matters, from the last card you put in your deck to the first choice you make in a battle. Best of all, there’s a strong narrative, something often overlooked in card-battling games.

Wildfrost is a roguelike game, so don’t expect to beat the game your first time through. You probably won’t beat it on your second try either, as Wildfrost is just as unforgiving for beginners as it is for experts. Don’t get discouraged; Wildfrost offers a massive amount of strategic depth, so you’ll never feel like you’re railroaded into a specific strategy for each boss.

Genre
Simulation

Brutal deck-building roguelikes are all well and good, but sometimes you just want to run a hotel with the assistance of various hamsters. You’ll start in a derelict hotel bereft of rooms, service, and, most importantly, guests. Recruit hamster staff, build rooms and facilities, and help out your guests to turn your hamster inn into a five-star hotel.

Hamster Inn is a low-stress management simulator that is the perfect game to wind down with at the end of the day. It’s a perfect mix of active and passive gameplay, so you can wake up each day ready to spend more money on renovations and guests.

AFK Journey stands out from the crowd of idle gacha games by offering a beautiful art style and genuinely rewarding gameplay. While we don’t recommend it for anyone who doesn’t enjoy gacha mechanics or idle gameplay, it’s one of the best in its genre, so fans of the best Android gacha games should certainly give it a try.

The huge range of game modes is the most compelling about AFK Journey. Even if you don’t engage in the idle mechanics (although it’s recommended as you’ll struggle to progress later in the game without them), there are PvP and PvE game modes to earn new heroes and equipment. Overall, AFK Journey is a surprisingly compelling addition to the gacha genre that we recommend you try.

Sometimes, you don’t want to delve into dungeons of horrifying monsters, but it’s undeniable that a malevolent antagonist makes any game much more compelling. Lonesome Village is a puzzle/adventure game where you’ll solve puzzles to rescue villagers from a spooky tower. While there is a distinct threat to the well-being of your town, the overall experience is relaxed from start to finish.

Lonesome Village is the perfect game for you if you enjoy puzzle games but want to feel like there are consequences to your actions. The more villagers you rescue, the more your time comes to life, giving you a distinct feeling of accomplishment as you play.

The Dadish games have long been some of our favorite platformers at AP, and now the series has jumped into the third dimension. It’s reminiscent of classic 3D platformers thanks to its cheerful, low-poly graphics, but plenty of collectibles and achievements will keep you occupied as you adventure through 50 levels.

We recommend Dadish 3D even if you’re a 2D platformer purist. It keeps everything we love about the Dadish games, and the 3D element is more than just a gimmick. But if you’re not sold, try some of our other favorite platformers on Android.

Don’t miss these other great games

Pilgrims

Pilgrims is a 2D adventure game where you can discover something new in each playthrough. While pitched as an adventure game, puzzle solving is the true challenge here. It’s not an exceptionally long game, but it is certainly worth your time.

Teeny Tiny Trains

Teeny Tiny Trains aims to bring back those childhood memories of playing with wooden trains through a series of cute but challenging puzzles. You’ll place simple tracks to begin with, but eventually, you’ll have to build a whole network to get your trains from A to B.

The Mystery of Eigengrau

The Mystery of Eigengrau is an atmospheric horror game in which you solve puzzles to escape from a dangerous forest. The game learns as you play, so every action you take has consequences.

Loop Hero

Loop Hero is a roguelike RPG where you’ll use a deck of cards to place enemies, buildings, and terrain to build your adventure as you go. The gloomy pixel-art design is worth seeing by itself, but the time-loop gameplay is immediately addictive.

SaGa Emerald Beyond

SaGa Emerald Beyond is a premium release for a reason. It’s a full-fledged AA release that launched simultaneously on all platforms and offers a huge amount of quests to explore and plenty of replayability.
