When it comes to movies that should never be made, there is a wide range of reasons, and one of them is undoubtedly Commando. While it may not be considered a classic from an artistic or technical standpoint, it has endured as a beloved action film for almost four decades. The reason behind its enduring popularity lies in its perfect representation of the over-the-top extravagance and excessive action that defined the 1980s era, as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s superstar status.
Interestingly, writer Steven E. de Souza revealed in an interview with the Radio Times that he was open to a reboot of Commando if Dwayne Johnson were to take on the iconic role previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, de Souza’s reasoning behind this suggestion may not make much sense, as he believes there aren’t any unique characters in movies today. Despite this, Johnson has already been involved in several reboots, such as Walking Tall, Get Smart, Race to Witch Mountain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Baywatch, and Jumanji: The Next Level. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that Johnson has ongoing plans to work on a reboot of Big Trouble in Little China.
“You need this unique character and they’re just not in motion pictures. I guess you could do it with The Rock, but The Rock isn’t going to do a reboot of something. I don’t think a reboot is worth doing, but if they do it, please put in the original ending!”
While de Souza may doubt Johnson’s inclination towards reboots, it is evident that Johnson is open to such projects. However, fans of Commando may want to hope and pray that it doesn’t become one of Johnson’s reboots.
