The adorable Intel NUC computer is being discontinued

Intel is discontinuing its NUC computers, according to a report from ServeTheHome. The company has decided to stop direct investment in the NUC business and shift its focus towards enabling its ecosystem partners to continue NUC innovation and growth. This decision will not affect Intel’s other business divisions.

In an email to The Verge, Mark Walton, Intel’s EMEA comms manager of client computing and graphics, confirmed the news and stated that Intel is working with its partners and customers to ensure a smooth transition and fulfillment of all current commitments.

While it remains unclear whether Intel will no longer manufacture PCs for consumers, the discontinuation of NUCs comes after the company sold its server business to Taiwanese company Mitac in April. Intel’s decision to abandon mini-PCs is disappointing, as the NUCs were highly regarded for their compact size, upgradability, and power. They were popular among IT departments and enthusiasts who desired small yet powerful computers.

Intel also offered “Extreme” NUCs that catered to gaming enthusiasts, with models like the “Beast Canyon” accommodating full-size graphics cards. The expansion of the NUC Extreme chassis made it suitable for more flexible workstation setups and supported Nvidia’s RTX 40-series cards.

However, one of the challenges with Intel’s NUC computers was their availability. They were often difficult to purchase, as they had to be sourced through resellers, many of which operated on a business-to-business basis. Additionally, the starting price for a bare-bones unit was often over $1,000.

Despite these challenges, the NUC’s design, performance, and customization options made it an attractive choice for tinkers and proponents of repairability. Intel promoted the upgradability of the NUC through its “Element” board, which could be swapped to support newer processors and technologies. Unfortunately, with the discontinuation of the NUC, it appears that this upgradability feature may no longer be available.
