It is absurd that out of a franchise that has produced seven films and spanned over 35 years, only one direct sequel exists among countless reboots. However, this is precisely what sets Predator 2 apart from the rest.
Stephen Hopkins’ criminally underrated cult favorite takes place ten years after the events of the original classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Danny Glover leads the action in the distant future of…1997. It is directly linked to the DNA of its predecessor, something that cannot be said about any other installment in the iconic sci-fi saga.
Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal’s Predators was a standalone story that deserved at least one follow-up, but unfortunately, fairness does not always prevail. Interestingly enough, Shane Black removed the only direct connection between his film, The Predator, and its predecessor. In the theatrical cut, Jake Busey’s character, Sean Keyes, was not confirmed to be the son of Peter, a scene-stealing character from Predator 2, played by his real-life father, Gary Busey.
Prey gets a pass for taking place centuries into the future, but Paul W.S. Anderson’s lackluster Alien vs. Predator presented its own storyline before it was discarded in favor of the even worse Requiem. Essentially, we have received five new additions to the mythology since the release of Predator 2 over three decades ago, and not a single one of them continues the story directly, which is mind-boggling.
However, this lack of follow-up doesn’t diminish the fact that Predator 2 still reigns supreme. According to FlixPatrol, iTunes subscribers have recently rediscovered or discovered for the first time that this film is still a top-ranked title on the platform this weekend.
