Testing Sky’s revolutionary TV viewing experience

Sky Live presents a fascinating and diverse range of experiences. It offers an eclectic mix of activities that can cater to a variety of interests and needs. One moment, you can immerse yourself in family-friendly games, reminiscent of the interactive nature of Wii Sports or Xbox Kinect, by simply waving your arms in front of the television. The next moment, you can receive precise feedback on your squat technique with the Mvmnt app.

If you work from home, Sky Live can transform your living room into a fully functional studio for Zoom calls. Moreover, its Watch Together feature, which integrates group video calls on one side of the screen while synchronizing playback of your favorite shows, matches, or movies, could potentially replace dedicated Love Island discussion groups on WhatsApp.

Having had the opportunity to test some of these experiences prior to the launch of Sky Live, we can confirm that everything works exactly as advertised. Without the need for a separate console or controller, we were able to enjoy various activities such as slicing through pineapples and pears in a fast-paced game of Fruit Ninja, playing Monopoly on the big screen against friends or family located anywhere in the world (using the iPhone or iPad app to join in), and indulging in splattering mud around with beloved Peppa Pig characters. While it’s unlikely that anyone would replace their Xbox Series X for Sky Live, these family-friendly gesture-controlled experiences offer a fun and reminiscent experience similar to Wii Sports.

Watch Together has the potential to be truly transformative, but it does require all participants to own Sky Glass. It’s important to note that the content available exclusively through Sky Cinema and Sky Sports will not be shared with those who haven’t subscribed to these optional extras. Instead, they will be prompted to add these bundles to their monthly bill. This can be viewed as an inevitable outcome, considering the extensive legal paperwork involved in initiating such a project.

If you find yourself in a situation where you and a few friends or family members own Sky Glass but aren’t geographically close enough to host an in-person Love Island or Ashes party, Sky Live offers the best solution for remotely enjoying a shared viewing experience that we’ve ever seen.

However, it’s worth mentioning that at launch, Sky Glass will not support shows and films from streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus. During our brief demonstration with the Zoom app, we were impressed by the superb call quality and the efficient automatic framing, even as new participants joined, people switched seats, and lighting conditions changed. While Zoom primarily caters to enterprise users, it would be great to see future support for platforms like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. Those who have Sky Glass in their home office or work from the comfort of their sofa can expect a remarkable upgrade.

Finally, Mvmnt stands out as the most compelling aspect of Sky Live. It offers a unique feature by providing feedback on your form, something not offered by other major at-home coaching services. This is truly transformative as it helps users avoid common mistakes and potential harm during their home workouts.

With an impressive lineup of 130 workouts available at launch, it remains to be seen how quickly the Mvmnt team will introduce new training plans, exercises, and classes. Continuous updates will be essential to maintain the interest and commitment of users who wish to incorporate this app into their daily fitness routines.

Considering that Sky Glass owners pay an additional £5 per month to skip advertisements in on-demand shows from ITVX and All4, the £6 per month charge for Sky Live and all the aforementioned experiences seems like an incredible value. Sky has hinted at the possibility of introducing new subscription tiers in the future, which may affect the value-for-money as Mvmnt potentially requires a separate subscription, similar to what we see with Apple Fitness+ and Peloton (priced between £9.99 and £19.99 per month).

If you find yourself intrigued by at least two of the four main categories offered by the Sky Live experience, it is definitely worth exploring.
