Tennant & Tate Discuss “Timeless Child,” Preparing to Return, and More

As we approach November, exciting updates are emerging on social media regarding the BBC, Disney+, and Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies’s plans for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. New key art posters featuring David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble have been released, along with a sneak peek at the Fourteenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver. In a recent interview for Doctor Who Magazine #593, Tennant and Tate discussed their returns to the show, shedding light on whether they needed to prepare by revisiting previous episodes. Tennant admitted his fear prevented him from doing so, while Tate humorously dismissed the idea, claiming that neither she nor Donna understood the intricacies of the Doctor Who universe. In fact, Tate joked that her lowbrow soul and low-rent intellect wouldn’t be able to comprehend it all. Tennant also emphasized that his new Doctor is not the same as the Tenth Doctor, as the series has had three different Doctors since then. The confusion surrounding the Doctor count was brought upon by the introduction of Jo Martin’s Doctor and the “The Timeless Child” storyline during Jodie Whittaker’s tenure. Tennant summarized the evolving canon and acknowledged the vast amount of content spanning the show’s 60-year history. Joining Tennant and Tate in the 60th anniversary special are Neil Patrick Harris and Yasmin Finney, with rumors suggesting their roles may be the Toymaker and Rose, respectively. Jacqueline King and Karl Collins will reprise their roles as Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, while Ruth Madeley joins the cast as Shirley Anne Bingham. The late Bernard Cribbins will posthumously appear as Wilfred Mott. Comic book characters Beep the Meep and the Wrarth Warriors will also have significant roles. Additionally, Ncuti Gatwa is expected to debut as the Fifteenth Doctor. Davies has written all three episodes of the special, and their titles were revealed during Eurovision 2023: “The Star Beast” directed by Rachel Talalay, “Wild Blue Yonder” directed by Tom Kingsley, and “The Giggle” directed by Chanya Button. The directors expressed their excitement and shared their impressions of the scripts. Kingsley described their episode as an “absolute nightmare” but ultimately felt inspired to take on the challenge. Talalay commented on the different tones and expanding scope of the specials, while Button reveled in the vastness and creativity displayed in Davies’s writing.
