Temporary Limit Imposed on Visible Tweets on Twitter

Last evening, numerous Twitter users reported difficulties in accessing tweets, receiving the error message “Rate Limit Exceeded.” This led many to believe that the microblogging platform was experiencing downtime. However, it was actually a result of the new rate limit set by Elon Musk and his team, restricting most users to viewing only 1,000 tweets per day, as mentioned in Musk’s recent tweet.

Twitter has implemented stricter limitations on the number of tweets users can view on a daily basis. Musk announced on Saturday that unverified accounts can only view up to 600 posts per day, while new accounts are limited to 300 tweets daily. On the other hand, verified accounts have the privilege of accessing up to 6,000 posts per day.

The reason behind these restrictions on tweet viewing is explained by Musk. These temporary measures were put in place to counter the “extreme levels of data scraping” conducted by “several hundred organizations” and “system manipulation.”

On Friday, Musk expressed his concern about the extensive scraping of Twitter data by numerous organizations, which he believes has had a negative impact on the user experience. It has been observed that companies utilizing large amounts of data to train artificial intelligence language models are primarily responsible for this practice. Musk finds it frustrating that his team has to urgently deploy a large number of servers just to cater to the excessive demands of some AI startups seeking inflated valuations.

Musk later announced that these viewing limits would be relaxed to 8,000 for verified accounts and 800 for users without Twitter Blue. Currently, the rate limit stands at 10,000, 1,000, and 500 tweets for Blue users, non-Blue users, and newly registered users respectively.

Furthermore, Twitter has also implemented restrictions on non-logged-in users from viewing tweets. This restriction, similar to the usage limit, is also temporary and has been initiated in response to data scrapers.
