Telecom Minister reveals TRAI’s imposition of a Rs. 35 Crore Fine on Telcos for Inadequate Control of Pesky Calls and SMS

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken strict action against service providers who have failed to control spam calls and messages on their networks. According to Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, telecom operators have disconnected a total of 47,414 connections in the years 2021 and 2022 for violating the Telecom Commercial Communication Customers Preference Regulation (TCCCPR), 2018. TRAI has imposed a penalty of Rs. 34.99 crore on the Access Service Providers for their inability to prevent unsolicited commercial communications from Registered Telemarketers. In an effort to combat this issue, TRAI has directed service providers to create a unified digital platform within two months. This platform will allow customers to provide and withdraw their consent for receiving promotional calls and messages. The first phase will focus on subscribers initiating the process to register their consent, while later phases will allow businesses to seek consent from customers. Access providers such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have been instructed to use a common short code starting with 127 for sending consent-seeking messages. This action was taken after a survey revealed that 76% of respondents experienced an increase in spam calls and messages associated with their conversations on WhatsApp and their activity on Facebook and Instagram. TRAI has been actively working to develop technologies and collaborate with other regulators to combat financial frauds associated with spam calls and messages.
