‘Talk to Me’ Directors Have Already Filmed an Intriguing Prequel

The highly acclaimed horror film Talk to Me has surpassed box office expectations and is receiving positive reviews. The directors, twin brothers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, have already filmed a prequel that focuses on brothers Cole and Duckett. This prequel is presented through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, offering a unique storytelling approach. The brothers have also revealed their plans for a sequel and have developed an extensive lore bible centered around the mysterious embalmed hand featured in the film. Additionally, they have other exciting projects in the works, including an adaptation of the popular video game Street Fighter. Talk to Me, the terrifying hit of the summer, has arrived in theaters with a bang. Directed by the talented twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, this spine-chilling possession film is not only impressing critics but also exceeding box office expectations, earning more than double its production budget during its opening weekend. With such a great response from audiences and numerous questions left unanswered about the eerie embalmed hand, the Philippou brothers have a world of possibilities to explore in expanding the cinematic universe they’ve created. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed that they have already filmed an entire prequel focusing on the characters Cole and Duckett. These brothers are briefly introduced at a house party in the opening minutes of Talk to Me, where tragedy soon strikes as Duckett, possessed by a malevolent entity, stabs Cole before taking his own life. This haunting event foreshadows the horrors that await Sophie Wilde’s character, Mia, and her friends as they succumb to the addicting rush of being possessed by the dead through the use of the embalmed hand. Duckett serves as a prime example of the consequences that occur when someone surpasses the 90-second possession limit and becomes fully taken over by spirits. “We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already,” Danny Philippou shared. “It’s an ingenious perspective, as the story unfolds entirely through the lens of mobile phones and social media. Perhaps we can release it sometime in the future.” While horror films centered around the internet and social media are not entirely new concepts, with movies like Unfriended, Host, and Cam exploring these themes, it would be a fitting approach to tell Duckett’s story through the digital realm, particularly considering Talk to Me’s exploration of the invasive nature of cell phones. Furthermore, the film only scratches the surface of Duckett’s connection to the hand, with Joss’s transaction history hinting at his acquisition of it from Duckett. Cole also provides the friends with information about the hand, leaving room for further exploration. The Philippou brothers have expressed their enthusiasm for expanding the Talk to Me franchise. During their time at the Sundance Film Festival, they stated in an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff that they have not only ideas for a sequel or two but an entire lore bible revolving around the mysterious embalmed hand at the story’s core. In their discussion with THR, they mentioned that they have already developed some ideas for a sequel while working on Talk to Me, ready to be pursued if A24 shows interest. “While writing the first film, you can’t help but envision scenes for a second film,” added Danny Philippou. “The mythology is so rich, and if A24 gives us the opportunity, we wouldn’t be able to resist. I believe we would jump at it.” Michael also chimed in on the potential for a sequel, stating, “We have many original stories that we want to tell, but the Talk to Me universe is also exciting to us. So the idea of a sequel is not out of the question.” In addition to Talk to Me, the Philippou brothers are currently focused on creating an action-packed adaptation of Capcom’s beloved video game series, Street Fighter, for Legendary Entertainment. They have lofty goals for their future in Hollywood, with plans for an action drama and another horror script already in the works. “We actually have another horror script called Bring Her Back that I would love to make next,” revealed Danny Philippou. Talk to Me is now playing in theaters. Keep an eye on Collider for updates on the Philippou brothers’ future projects, and be sure to check out our previous interview with them below.
