Takata airbag defect prompts GM to recall 900 vehicles in Canada and U.S.

General Motors (GM) is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its customers by recalling approximately 900 vehicles in Canada and the United States.

The reason behind this recall is the presence of Takata airbags in these vehicles, which have the potential to explode and project dangerous shrapnel in the event of a crash.

The affected vehicles, including specific models of Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic, Volt, and Buick Verano from the 2013 model year, face the risk of their driver’s front airbag inflators exploding due to a manufacturing defect.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is already conducting an investigation into Takata, although vehicles equipped with Takata airbags have not been officially recalled until now.

This is because Takata uses ammonium nitrate in its inflators, which are designed to create a controlled explosion to inflate airbags during a crash. However, the NHTSA claims that over time, ammonium nitrate can degrade, potentially causing it to explode with excessive force. As a result, the accompanying metal canister may rupture and propel shrapnel into the vehicle’s cabin.

According to CTV News, this defect has tragically resulted in at least 26 deaths in the United States since May 2009 and over 30 deaths globally, including fatalities in Malaysia and Australia. Additionally, approximately 400 people have sustained injuries due to this defect.

This defect ultimately led to the bankruptcy of Takata, a Japanese company.
