Gran Turismo Movie Trailer Rips Camera Angles Straight From the PlayStation Game

The Gran Turismo movie has just released a captivating trailer, offering fans a sneak peek into what they can expect from the highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of the popular PlayStation racing game. Director Neill Blomkamp took the stage during Sony’s CES 2023 presentation to introduce the film and showcase its thrilling content. The teaser trailer displays stunning cars and dynamic camera angles that closely resemble those found in the game, while also providing a first look at David Harbour’s character, Jack Salter. Salter, a retired racecar driver, serves as a mentor to the next generation of racers. In the trailer, we witness the Stranger Things actor supervising Gran Turismo players as they use the game as a driving simulator.

As previously revealed, the movie is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a British racecar driver who launched his career through the GT Academy training program. The sneak peek confirms that Archie Madekwe will portray Mardenborough, who trains under Salter’s guidance in his pursuit of becoming a professional racecar driver. Orlando Bloom, featuring a grey Nissan jacket, appears in the promo as Danny Moore, indicating his character’s affiliation with Mardenborough’s crew.

During the event, Director Blomkamp discussed the use of Sony Venice 2 camera technology with detachable sensors to replicate the game’s unique camera angles. This proved to be particularly valuable when capturing shots from inside the cockpit. He promised viewers three key camera perspectives in the Gran Turismo movie: the iconic grill angle, a thrilling POV shot from within the car, and a third-person view mounted on an arm to showcase the car from behind. The filming of the Gran Turismo movie concluded last month after an intense seven-week period. Stunt driver Mauro Calo, who participated in the production, claimed to have introduced groundbreaking techniques for filming race cars in action.

The Gran Turismo franchise is just one of several PlayStation games receiving live-action adaptations. In addition to the Gran Turismo movie, audiences can look forward to a Days Gone film and a God of War series for Amazon Prime Video. The highly anticipated HBO series adaptation of The Last of Us is set to premiere on January 16 on Disney+ Hotstar in India. The star-studded cast of the Gran Turismo film includes Darren Barnet, Djimon Hounsou, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Daniel Puig, Josha Stradowski, and Thomas Kretschman.

Furthermore, Sony has announced that Gran Turismo 7, the latest installment in the beloved racing simulation franchise, will offer support for PS VR2 upon its launch on February 22. This exciting feature will provide an immersive experience for players who already own the game on PS4 or PS5, as they will receive a free upgrade to the PS VR2 version.

Prepare to witness the thrilling world of Gran Turismo on the big screen when the movie hits theaters on August 11.
