Suzume’s Streaming Status in India Uncertain as Crunchyroll Confirms Release Date for Multiple Regions

The popular anime film Suzume, directed by Makoto Shinkai, is set to stream globally in most regions, but India and the broader South Asian/Southeast Asian areas won’t have access. Crunchyroll’s announcement mentioned availability from November 16 in multiple areas worldwide, including North and South America, Europe (excluding France), Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS.

The film had a grand theatrical release in India by PVR Pictures on April 21 this year. Its global distribution rights lie with Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures, and Wild Bunch International, excluding Asia. Although Suzume also received a Hindi dub for its theatrical release in India, it remains uncertain if the dub will be available for streaming or if it was exclusively for cinemas.

In Southeast Asian regions where the film was distributed by various companies like Encore Films and Warner Bros. Pictures, Crunchyroll isn’t streaming it either, which suggests that it may release at a later date there, or on different platforms altogether.

Despite immense support from Indian anime fans, reaching box office expectations of ₹10 crores and hosting early premieres attended by Makoto Shinkai, the Indian audience will have to wait for the film’s streaming availability. Accessibility of anime has become much better compared to the past, but there’s still a long way to go.

IGN awarded Suzume a high score of 9 out of 10 in its review, writing, “Thanks to its strong cast, thought-provoking plot, and wonderful animation, Suzume is one of the most captivating animated films released this year.” You can also read about Suzume originally being a love story between two girls, and how the film captured the hearts of people worldwide.
