Survivor Director of Star Wars Jedi Aims to Turn Cal Kestis’ Story into a Trilogy

The highly anticipated release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is still several weeks away, but the developers at Respawn Entertainment are already considering the possibility of a trilogy. In a recent interview with IGN, director Stig Asmussen revealed his desire to expand Jedi Knight Cal Kestis’ story to a third and final installment. While the fate of this idea depends on the success of the upcoming game, Asmussen stated that sequel discussions were already taking place even before the release of 2019’s Jedi: Fallen Order. If the threequel gets the green light, Asmussen mentioned that they would most likely utilize the Unreal Engine 5 for its development.

“I’ve always envisioned this as a trilogy,” Asmussen shared with IGN. “How can we continue to evolve Cal and the crew’s journey in new and exciting ways? With Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, we have already mapped out the timeframe (set five years after the events of the first game), the high stakes involved, the overall tone, and explored ideas beyond the main storyline.” However, transitioning from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 could be challenging due to the proprietary features that the current engine has been optimized for. It may require some retooling to adapt it to the new engine.

Last month, IGN showcased some gameplay footage from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, focusing on the exploration of the planet Koboh. In the early stages of the game, after crashlanding on the planet, Kestis must navigate his way to the Cantina to seek help in repairing his ship. The exploration aspect has been significantly enhanced compared to the first game, featuring the ability to tame beasts and use them as mounts, fast travel options, and icons that indicate locked-off areas that can only be accessed after acquiring specific abilities. Taking inspiration from Dark Souls games, fast travel in Jedi: Survivor works by discovering meditation points where players can rest to heal and choose previously discovered checkpoints to teleport to. The game also incorporates elements from Metroid, as certain areas of the world are initially inaccessible and require Kestis to obtain new gear or skill upgrades in order to gain access.

The planet Koboh acts as the central hub world, bustling with non-playable characters to interact with and shops where players can purchase items. In addition to the beloved droid BD-1, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor introduces a new companion named Bode Akuna, who shares a brotherly bond with Kestis, as previously mentioned by Asmussen. Akuna will accompany the protagonist on missions and actively participate in combat encounters, diverting enemy attention. Players will also have the ability to command him to perform special moves that deal devastating damage.

Another gameplay preview released last month showcased some of Kestis’ new fighting stances. He now possesses the ability to dual-wield lightsabers and even connect their hilts to form a twin-blade staff that can deflect incoming projectiles. Kestis also gains the power to lift enemies off the ground, causing them to hover temporarily. In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Force abilities were limited to basic push and pull mechanics.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is scheduled for release on April 28 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
