Surprisingly, the answer is yes: Could a future Final Fantasy adopt a CoD-style FPS gameplay?

As the highly anticipated release of Final Fantasy 16 approaches, Square Enix has been actively promoting the upcoming RPG and addressing the controversy surrounding its departure from turn-based and ATB combat in favor of an action-packed spectacle fighter style.

However, Square Enix believes that Final Fantasy should not be limited to traditional genres associated with the series. They are open to exploring other genres, including the possibility of a first-person shooter. In an interview with Bloomberg, Yoshinori Kitase, Vice President of Square Enix, acknowledged the expectations of Final Fantasy fans for each new game to introduce new characters, storylines, and mechanics.

According to Kitase, the only requirement is that the game must incorporate crystals as a crucial part of its narrative. Crystals are often sought after by different factions in the game due to their immense power. This explains why Kitase is open to the idea of a future Final Fantasy game taking the form of a first-person shooter, akin to games like Call of Duty.

Kitase mentioned, “As a creator, my imagination has its limits, so it’s truly wonderful to have a new generation of creators collaborating on the franchise.”

Producer Naoki Yoshida of Final Fantasy 16 even playfully remarked that despite the disparities in technology, era, tone, and genre, Call of Duty shares similarities with Final Fantasy in the sense that both involve a small group of individuals striving to save the world.

However, this flexibility in exploring different genres also invites criticism from fans who expect Final Fantasy to adhere to a certain style and aesthetic. Yoshida admitted that Square Enix has not always been successful in deviating from what many consider the standard Final Fantasy formula, citing the initial launch of Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 15 as examples.

We will soon discover if Square Enix has achieved success right from the start with Final Fantasy 16, as reviews are set to be released later today. Stay tuned for our thoughts on this bold new direction.
