Surprising World Premiere at TIFF for Taika Waititi’s ‘Next Goal Wins’

It appears that Taika Waititi is on the verge of achieving success with his film “Next Goal Wins,” thanks to its inclusion in the lineup of the Toronto International Film Festival. The festival will serve as the movie’s official world premiere, followed by a wide theatrical release in November. While the specific premiere date for “Next Goal Wins” at TIFF is yet to be announced, fans of Waititi can celebrate this exciting news.

This announcement comes as a surprise considering the challenges and delays that “Next Goal Wins” has faced in recent years. The film initially wrapped production in 2020 but encountered setbacks due to the Armie Hammer scandal. As a result, Will Arnett replaced Hammer, leading to reshoots and further delays. The release date was pushed from April 2023 to September of this year, and finally settled on November 17. However, with the film now confirmed for TIFF, it seems that the long wait may finally be over.

“Next Goal Wins” – A True Story Adaptation

“Next Goal Wins” is a narrative adaptation based on the 2014 documentary of the same name. The film centers around the American Samoa soccer team, which gained notoriety for their devastating 31-0 loss during a 2001 FIFA match. As they strive to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the team must overcome the negative perception surrounding them. Despite the potentially disheartening subject matter, Waititi has assured audiences that “Next Goal Wins” will be his “least cynical film.”
