Succession Dominates Emmy Nominations 2023 with 27 Nods, The Last of Us Trails Behind

The 2023 Emmy nominations were revealed last night, presented by Yvette Nicole Brown from Community. HBO’s popular drama Succession season 4 stole the show with a total of 27 nominations, including nods for best actors Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, and Sarah Snook in the Drama category. Another standout was The Last of Us, a groundbreaking live-action video game adaptation, which received 24 nominations and a spot for Best Drama Series. The lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey also earned recognition, as well as co-creator Craig Mazin for Best Direction. Episode 3 of The Last of Us, titled “Long, Long Time,” written by Peter Hoar, stood out with its compelling queer romance story and received a nomination. The episode’s main actors Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett also secured nominations in the Best Guest Actor category.

Coming in third with just a slight difference is the second season of The White Lotus, which earned an impressive 23 nominations, including recognition for Best Drama Series, writing, direction, and supporting roles. It’s worth noting that none of the cast members were nominated as best actors or actresses, as they all shared an equal amount of screen time. HBO continues to dominate the Emmy Awards with their exceptional lineup of shows. However, it is surprising that House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off, only received one nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Despite being one of the biggest shows of last year, the cast, including Paddy Considine who portrayed King Viserys, went unrecognized. Considine’s character faced difficult decisions as he sought an heir to the Iron Throne while battling with a fatal illness. The series also didn’t receive any nominations for directing or writing.

Additionally, three shows from the Star Wars universe made it onto the Emmy’s list. Andor received three nominations, including Best Drama and Best Direction, with Beau Willimon earning a nomination for Best Writing. The Mandalorian and the less memorable Obi-Wan Kenobi were recognized for their technical achievements in categories such as costumes, cinematography, and stunts. Obi-Wan Kenobi was also nominated for Best Limited Series.

The 75th annual Emmys are scheduled to be livestreamed from the Peacock Theater on early Tuesday, September 19 at 5:30am IST. In the US, the awards show will air on Monday, September 18 at 5pm PT, though no host has been announced yet. There is a possibility that the event may be postponed due to the ongoing writer’s strike in Hollywood. Additionally, ongoing contract negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers could lead to an actor’s strike in the coming weeks.
