Study finds toxic ‘forever chemicals’ may be ‘intentionally added’ to some period products

A recent study has revealed that certain period products, including pads, tampons, and menstrual cups, may contain potentially toxic chemicals known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals, known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are often added to products with non-stick and stain-resistant qualities. Researchers have found that these chemicals could pose a risk to health, accumulating in the body and being linked to immune suppression and certain types of cancer.

While PFAS are not present in all period products, the study has found that some may accidentally or intentionally contain these chemicals. Governments around the world are considering implementing bans or regulations on the use of PFAS in textile products.

The study examined various layers of period products, including tampons, pads, and menstrual cups, as well as their packaging, for the presence of PFAS. While tampons and menstrual cups generally did not contain fluorine, scientists were surprised to find high concentrations of these compounds in the wrappers of some pads and outer layers of period underwear.

Researchers theorize that PFAS may be intentionally added to these products to keep moisture out of the wrappers and prevent blood from spreading. However, they note that many feminine products are produced without the use of these compounds.

Further studies will analyze the specific types of PFAS found in the samples. The findings of this research will be presented at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society.
