When Mahershala Ali surprised audiences at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con by announcing that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be rebooting the beloved Daywalker, no one could have predicted the tumultuous journey that lay ahead for the production, reminiscent of the troubled Blade: Trinity.
The 2004 threequel is infamous for its behind-the-scenes turmoil, with reports of intense conflicts between star Wesley Snipes and writer/director David S. Goyer. Snipes even went so far as to refuse to come to set, and in one scene, he wouldn’t open his eyes, leading to questionable CGI manipulation. Critically panned and commercially underwhelming, it marked a disappointing end to a franchise that had revitalized the superhero genre following the disastrous Batman & Robin in 1997.
Despite the ominous echoes of the past, we can only hope that Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of Blade will fare much better than Trinity. Nevertheless, streaming subscribers have eagerly embraced the opportunity to witness the leather-clad slayer take on Dracula himself, propelling Trinity to the top of the Prime Video viewership charts, according to FlixPatrol.
It was a disastrous conclusion to a promising saga, and we can only hope that history doesn’t repeat itself.
