Valve made a major announcement in April, revealing that they were giving Steam a significant overhaul. This went beyond just a visual update, as it included unifying the codebase for different interfaces, such as Desktop, Big Picture Mode, and Steam Deck. They also introduced new features like a cloud notepad and pinnable panels in the in-game overlay, revamped the web browser, screenshot manager, and notifications tabs, and added hardware acceleration for Linux and Mac.
While many of these changes were available in beta, today marks the full stable release. So if your Steam looks different, that’s because of these updates.
My gaming colleagues and I have been pleasantly surprised by the improvements. Steam has had an outdated appearance for a long time, but now it looks nice. To quote my colleague Tom Warren, “I finally like Steam.”
Personally, I’m most excited about the cloud notepad, which I can confirm also works on the Steam Deck. However, it doesn’t currently function as a translucent in-game overlay like it does on desktop. To access the cloud notepad during a game, you can press the Steam button and scroll down to find the Notes feature.
Overall, these updates have breathed new life into Steam, making it a more enjoyable and modern gaming platform.
