The highly anticipated fifth season of the popular Netflix anime, The Dragon Prince, was originally scheduled to premiere on July 27. However, it seems that plans have changed as the new season has officially been released today. The surprise launch was announced alongside a new trailer at San Diego Comic-Con.
For those unfamiliar with the show’s structure, The Dragon Prince had a three-season story arc, and season four introduced a new arc called “Mystery of Aaravos.” This arc focuses on the search for a mysterious elf named Aaravos, who promises to resurrect Viren if freed from his prison. Season 4 ended with our heroes in the midst of this search, and season 5 will continue their journey.
The unexpected release of the fifth season was teased by The Dragon Prince’s official Twitter account with the message: “SURPRISE! Watch SEASON 5 of #TheDragonPrince RIGHT NOW—only on @Netflix! (seriously)” The accompanying tweet included a link to the Netflix page where the new season can be streamed.
At San Diego Comic-Con, the news of the season’s early release was accompanied by a group of pirates storming the hall, hinting that swashbuckling adventures may await viewers in season five. This fits with the season’s book title, “Ocean,” following the previous seasons’ themes of Moon, Sky, Sun, and Earth. It is expected that the next season will be titled “Stars,” as it represents the only remaining primal source of magic in The Dragon Prince that hasn’t been featured yet. However, the creators might surprise us with a different title.
If you’re new to The Dragon Prince or a bit behind, we highly recommend catching up on the show. Season four was described as a “darker, bigger season that kickstarts a new chapter of the new saga” in our 8/10 review. And if you haven’t started watching yet, season one is a great place to begin.
