Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Is Headed to Old-Gen PS4 and Xbox One Consoles

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is now in development for old-gen platforms, according to EA’s Q1 2024 earnings call. Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the game, is currently in the early stages of creating dedicated versions for the PS4 and Xbox One. When the game originally launched in April, it skipped previous generations, like many other major publishers who have favored newer consoles for better optimization and visual quality. There is no release window yet for the old-gen versions, but it will be interesting to see how much visual fidelity the game sacrifices to run at a minimum of 30fps on older hardware.

“Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” has received critical acclaim and commercial success since its launch, with millions of players already enjoying the game. CEO Andrew Wilson expressed pride in the game’s success and confirmed the development team’s commitment to bringing the Jedi experience to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One due to the strength of the franchise and community demand. The game, along with the FIFA 23 ecosystem, contributed significantly to EA’s record-breaking first quarter, with net bookings totaling $1.58 billion (approximately Rs. 13,021 crore), a 21% increase YoY.

While the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X versions of the game will continue to receive “additional improvements” for better performance, the old-gen versions are not being abandoned. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was well-received for its story and intricate level design, but it faced performance issues, especially on PC, where it delivered choppy and inconsistent framerates even in interior segments with minimal movement. The console versions had some issues as well, but they were not as severe as on PC. Respawn has been diligently releasing patches to gradually improve the game’s performance. Previously, Respawn pointed to Windows 10 running on newer CPUs as the cause of the performance issues, although this has not been observed in other games.

In recent job listings on EA’s careers portal, there were indications that a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor might already be in development. One listing sought a Senior VFX Artist specifically for the game, while another was for a Senior Combat Designer on the “Star Wars Team.” Experience with Unreal Engine 4 and possibly UE5 was highlighted as a plus for applicants. These listings align with comments from game director Stig Asmussen, who expressed his desire for Cal Kestis’ journey to expand into a trilogy. He also mentioned that discussions for potential sequels were happening internally even before the release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, and that the third game would likely be built using Unreal Engine 5.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The release window for the old-gen version has not been announced yet.
