Star Rail, Lost in Play and Lies of P

Apple App Store has announced the winners of the App Store Awards 2023. 14 apps and games have been recognised from 40 finalists, “for delivering exceptional technical innovation, user experience, and design”. We saw games like Vampire Survivors, Lost in Play, Honkai: Star Rail, and Return to Monkey Island make it to the nominations. The winners have now been selected by Apple’s Editorial team and revealed on November 30.

Apple Game of the Year 2023 Awards Recipients

Honkai: Star Rail, from Hoyoverse and Cognosphere has won the iPhone Game of the Year. The other two finalists in the category were Afterplace and Vampire Survivors. Snapbreak Games’ Lost in Play has won the iPad Game of the Year, against Eggy Party and Pocket City 2. Lies of P has won the category of Mac Game of the Year. Elex II and Return to Monkey Island were its final two competitors in the category. Finally, Hello Kitty Island Adventure from Sunblink has won the award for Apple Arcade Game of the Year.

Cultural Impact Winners

Apple has also selected 5 Cultural Impact Winners, where they acknowledged app and games for “their ability to drive positive change”, and “encouraged users to learn and grow in an inclusive and accessible space, contribute toward a more sustainable future, and explore self-reflection and connection across generations.”

Games like Unpacking and Finding Hannah have won the award for Cultural Impact. Humble Bundle’s Unpacking is a block-fitting puzzle game about navigating through familiar and new experiences. You get to pull objects out of boxes and fit them into a new home. Fein Games’ Finding Hannah is a relaxing hidden object puzzle game, about a woman going through a mid-life crisis. Pok Pok, a digital toy room for kids has also won the Cultural Impact Award, along with AssistiveWare’s Proloquo and Too Good to Go.

Other winners of the Apple App Store Awards 2023

In the apps category, AllTrail has won iPhone App of the Year, Prêt-à-Makeup has won the iPad App of the Year. Beyond these, Photomator has won the Mac App of the Year, while Mubi has won Apple TV App of the Year. SmartGym on the other hand has won Apple Watch App of the Year.

Generative AI has been determined as the trend of the year as more and more apps and games started integrating AI, “at an unprecedented clip”, as stated in the official blog post. It further adds, “Although many AI features are still in their infancy, they gave us a chance to see, firsthand, the headline-making technology in action—with all of its benefits and challenges.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement that “This year’s winners represent the limitless potential of developers to bring their visions to life, creating apps and games with remarkable ingenuity, exceptional quality, and purpose-driven missions.”
