Despite the controversy surrounding Letitia Wright’s alleged stance on vaccinations in the lead up to the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she has emerged as one of the most widely-praised aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel.
Many were skeptical of Wright’s ability to step into the role of the late Chadwick Boseman’s onscreen replacement, but her ferociously committed performance has won over many fans. It’s no surprise that viewers are eager to see where Shuri’s character will go next, and Wright herself has expressed an intriguing notion for her character’s future.
In an interview with Inverse, Wright proposed exploring the storyline introduced in Ta Nehisi Coates’ A Nation Under Our Feet, which involves the princess of Wakanda sacrificing herself and entering a state of “living death” that leaves her soul in limbo.
“She took the mantle at a time where people really doubted her. She actually takes on a new form in the future. She really never dies, which is really interesting. She has these amazing crazy superpowers, and she’s an encyclopedia of information. She’s Griot times a thousand.”
While it’s unlikely that Shuri will become a sentient AI in Black Panther 3, as someone else will play the main role in costume, Wright’s idea presents a way of keeping the character present in the franchise moving forward.
