Music-streaming company Spotify is reportedly set to make one of its popular free features paid-only. Reports suggest that the Swedish music streaming company is testing to make in-app lyrics a premium-only feature. Several Spotify users have reported that they noticed that in-app lyrics, which pop up under the playing song, are now locked under a paywall.
These users said that they see a notification bubble saying, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.” It’s accompanied by a link to sign up. Spotify told The Verge that the feature is currently in a testing phase. “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests, some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning,” CJ Stanley, Spotify’s co-head of global communications, was quoted as saying. “We don’t have any further news to share at this time,” Stanley added.
Reports suggest that the aim may be to get more users to sign up for its paid services. However, it is not clear which way the feature may eventually go — become paid or remain free. But it is for sure that the company is experimenting as it looks to build features that users might pay for, as the price of Premium.
