One such way is by becoming Pros-at-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with the support of professional sports leagues.

The significance of STEM in sports is often overlooked, but an incident in Cincinnati in January shed light on its importance. When Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during a football game, it was STEM professionals who swiftly came to his aid on the field, using CPR and advanced medical technology to save his life.

This incident emphasizes why the sporting industry, particularly professional athletics, should invest in advancing STEM education, focusing on uplifting underrepresented students, particularly from Black and Hispanic communities. By doing so, these students can see a future for themselves not only on the field but also in the sidelines, where they can make a difference for teams and players.

At present, the field of STEM is predominantly represented by white males, as studies have shown that educational and societal barriers limit the number of Black, Hispanic, and female individuals studying and working in STEM careers. The sports industry has the power to overcome these obstacles by creating more opportunities for women and students of color to pursue STEM careers.

For example, STEM NOLA, a nonprofit organization affiliated with STEM Global Action (SGA), hosted a STEM festival in New Orleans before the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl game. This event provided hands-on STEM activities for K-12 students, exposing them to robotics, automobile and drone building, anatomy dissections, and more. Events like these help create a pipeline for under-resourced students to study STEM in college and secure quality STEM jobs.

STEM is deeply integrated into the world of sports. Athletes rely on advanced technology such as wearable sensors, biometric data analysis, and video software to monitor and improve their performance. Sports equipment is designed using engineering, physics, and materials science to ensure optimal performance and safety. Sports medicine professionals use technology like MRI and CT scans to diagnose injuries and aid in the rehabilitation process. Leagues like the NFL have also implemented technologies to improve player safety, such as concussion monitoring systems and advanced helmet designs.

Moreover, analytics play a crucial role in sports.
