Spider-Verse Regains Top Position at Weekend Box Office

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse reclaimed the top spot at the Weekend Box Office while The Flash continued to underperform.

Spider-Verse continues to impress, as the sequel climbed back to the number one position at the weekend box office. It took a little longer than usual for the estimates of Elemental to be confirmed by Disney, but it’s now official: Spider-Man rules again. The film earned $19.3 million, regaining the top spot in its fourth week of release. This brings its domestic gross to $317 million, closely following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the biggest film of the summer so far. As long as it maintains its impressive performance, it may even reach the top spot. This weekend, it only experienced a 29% drop in revenue. This marks a major change in my summer box office predictions, as I acknowledge that I have learned valuable lessons that I will discuss later in the summer.

Spider-Verse Holds Off Elemental

Spider-Verse maintained its lead against another animated film, Pixar’s Elemental, which earned $18 million in its second week with a respectable -38% drop in revenue. This indicates positive word of mouth for the film, although its initial low opening will still limit its performance. It still has a chance to reach $100 million if it continues to hold well. In third place was The Flash, which is now considered a commercial failure, experiencing a massive -72% drop in revenue during its second weekend and earning $15.2 million. Warner Bros. is surely hoping that James Gunn knows what he’s doing. Fourth place went to Jennifer Lawrence’s comedy No Hard Feelings, which opened at the top of pre-release tracking with $15.1 million. These two films may even switch positions before all is said and done. Rounding out the top five was Transformers: Rise of the Beasts with $11 million. Considering initial expectations, it is performing well, with a total gross of $122 million in three weeks.

The top five films at the weekend box office for June 23rd were:

  1. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse – $19.3 million
  2. Elemental – $18 million
  3. The Flash – $15.2 million
  4. No Hard Feelings – $15.1 million
  5. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – $11 million

Next week, Indiana Jones returns for one last adventure as Dial of Destiny debuts in theaters. Despite unfavorable reviews, the established fandom of the Indiana Jones franchise may still contribute to a successful opening weekend. The disappointing performance of The Flash concerns Disney, as its strategy primarily relied on nostalgia for Michael Keaton, which did not resonate with audiences. However, I believe Indiana Jones has a dedicated fanbase, and it will open with $77 million, surpassing Spider-Verse to claim the top spot.
