Sources Say Microsoft’s Takeover Deal with Activision Targets Only Cloud Streaming Rivals in EU Remedies

According to insiders, Microsoft Corp’s efforts to address European Union antitrust concerns regarding its $69 billion acquisition of Activision solely focus on cloud gaming services. Surprisingly, there is no mention of rival Sony in their proposed solutions, indicating that the Commission may no longer be concerned about competition in the console market.

While Microsoft submitted its proposal to the European Commission last week, specific details have not been disclosed. However, sources reveal that Microsoft has offered 10-year licensing deals for cloud gaming services, citing examples such as Nvidia, Boosteroid (a Ukraine-based cloud gaming provider), and Ubitus from Japan.

The EU competition enforcer has granted rivals and customers until the end of this week to provide feedback before a decision on the deal is made by May 22.

It is worth noting that Microsoft’s offer to the EU is narrower in scope compared to the offer made to the UK competition agency. The UK offer includes licensing deals for cloud gaming services and a 10-year deal with parity on content and quality for Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. This offer would directly involve Sony, the critic and owner of PlayStation.

According to reliable sources, the Commission is likely to accept these licensing deals and approve the acquisition. However, it remains uncertain if the UK watchdog will accept the proposed behavioral remedies.
