Sony Refuses to Disclose PS6 Information to Activision under Microsoft Ownership

Sony has officially stated that it will not share any details about the PS6 console with Activision Blizzard if Microsoft acquires the company. In a statement to the US Federal Trade Commission, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan explained that Sony cannot take the risk of sharing sensitive information with its direct competitor.

The FTC received Ryan’s comments in April during a questioning about Sony’s position on Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sony expressed concerns that its game development would be disrupted since it would no longer be able to share confidential details about its next console in development. This would greatly impede Activision Blizzard’s ability to create games for the PS6 console.

Follow-up statements from Ryan regarding the impact on Sony were heavily redacted from court documents. However, he also highlighted another concern: if Activision Blizzard becomes owned by Microsoft, it may not have the incentive to include PlayStation-exclusive features, such as the use of the DualSense’s haptic feedback, in its games. Ryan believes that Microsoft’s primary focus after the acquisition would be to optimize its overall Xbox business, rather than prioritize the business of Activision.

Axios reporter Stephen Totilo pointed out on Twitter that this issue already arises when Microsoft works with PlayStation-owned studios like Bungie. It remains unclear what Sony expects Microsoft to share with these studios when they develop games for Microsoft platforms.

On a separate note, Nintendo announced the release of the Metal Gear Master Collection Vol. 1, which brings classic Metal Gear games to the Nintendo Switch.
