Sony Announces Details for Next Week’s Hour-Long PlayStation Showcase Event

Sony is set to host an exciting summer video game showcase event, which has just been announced. The event, scheduled for next week, will feature a one-hour-long livestream that promises to unveil “new creations” from both Sony’s first-party and third-party studios. These creations are specifically aimed at the upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 platforms. The livestream will be available on PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels on May 25 at 1:30 am IST in India and May 24 at 1 pm PT in the US. This announcement follows Geoff Keighley’s confirmation of Sony’s participation in the Summer Game Fest, which is set to kick off in June. Notably, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all pulled out from this year’s E3 event, resulting in the cancellation of the summer video game expo.

As for what to expect from this event, it’s hard to say for sure. However, given that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is approaching its fall release window, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some new information or gameplay footage for that title. Tony Todd, the voice actor for Venom in the game, previously hinted at a September release, with significant advertising campaigns planned for August. Additionally, Insomniac Games, the studio behind Spider-Man, is also working on a standalone Wolverine game, and fans may hope for an update on that project as well. Another highly anticipated title from Sony is Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game, which the studio has confirmed is in development. Based on concept art, it appears that the game will be set in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, offering players a brutal and immersive experience with a fresh narrative and cast.

The PlayStation showcase will also feature new IP presentations. This will be the first comprehensive video game presentation from Sony since September 2021, when Spider-Man 2 was announced alongside trailers for God of War Ragnarök and the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. The latter project underwent changes in development, transitioning from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive after an unsatisfactory internal demo. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that expectations for the KOTOR remake should be minimized. Although there have been rumors and eager requests for a Bloodborne remake or remaster for PC and PS5, there hasn’t been any official information on that front. On the other hand, the possibility of a Death Stranding 2 announcement seems likely, especially after Kojima Productions unveiled a lengthy cinematic trailer during The Game Awards 2022. Hideo Kojima, the studio’s founder, has also been teasing meetings with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) on his Twitter account.

Microsoft has also confirmed the details for its Xbox Games Showcase, which is scheduled to stream on June 11. The event will provide first looks and surprises from Xbox’s internal and third-party studios, followed by a dedicated Starfield Direct event. Ubisoft, another major publisher, initially expressed interest in participating in E3 2023 but subsequently pulled out and will host its own Ubisoft Forward Live event on June 12. The COVID-19 pandemic and global lockdowns have been key factors in major game publishers opting for online showcase events, as demonstrated by the success of Keighley’s Summer Game Fest. This digital format allows for effective product marketing while eliminating the need and costs associated with physical E3 booths.
