Snowplow damage causes Xfinity internet, cable outage across Grand County for almost 24 hours

Grand County residents and businesses who rely on Xfinity as their internet provider experienced an outage that started on the morning of Feb. 3 and lasted nearly 24 hours. The outage also affected Xfinity cable services.

Xfinity confirmed that customers experienced internet interruptions in Granby, Winter Park, Fraser, Kremmling, Tabernash, Grand Lake and Hot Sulphur Springs. Individuals who were signed up to receive messages from the internet provider may have received a text message notifying them of the outage. Others may have simply noticed that their internet wasn’t working correctly.

The outage’s cause was network damage. According to Leslie Oliver, a representative from Xfinity, a section of fiber network was damaged by snowplows performing snow and ice removal.

Once the damaged area was determined safe to work in, technicians began working to make the necessary repairs and restore services. Xfinity technicians worked around the clock in order to repair the splice and fiber. These efforts were made difficult due to weather conditions, according to Oliver.

The outage lasted from approximately 8 a.m. Saturday morning until 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Customers can also apply for an outage credit by signing into their Xfinity account online and filling out a short request.

According to a Facebook post by the Town of Kremmling, 20,000 residential subscribers, 18 fiber business customers and five cell towers were impacted by the outage.

Xfinity offers Storm-Ready Wifi which includes a Storm-Ready device and battery backup to keep homes online for up to four hours through network and power outages with cellular data. During an outage, the storm-ready device will switch from broadband to cellular connectivity.
