Smartphones, smart devices steering India’s digital economy in the last decade: Study

In the last decade, the availability of affordable smartphones and smart devices has empowered Indian consumers to actively participate in India’s growing digital economy. Not only have they benefited from the latest technological advancements, but they have also witnessed a significant increase in digital payments (88%), content creation/consumption (80%), and gaming (70%), according to a study conducted by CyberMedia Research (CMR).

The Impact of Different Brands
The study reveals that Xiaomi has consistently dominated the Indian market in the past decade, with 42% of participants expressing their satisfaction and preference for Xiaomi products. Additionally, 27% of respondents stated that Xiaomi was their first-ever smartphone, closely followed by Samsung at 24%. Among Xiaomi users, 53% reported being satisfied with their smartphones and smart devices, and 45% named Xiaomi as their favorite brand.

Key Findings of the Study

  • Friends and family have the strongest influence (63%) on users when it comes to purchasing smartphones and smart devices.
  • Samsung is strongly associated with industry leadership (42%), reliability (42%), popularity (42%), long usable life (42%), and feeling great (41%). On the other hand, Xiaomi is strongly associated with feeling great (53%), feeling powerful (46%), reliability (42%), customer centricity (45%), and industry leadership (44%).
  • In terms of brand awareness, Xiaomi leads with 78%, followed by Samsung with 75%. However, in terms of usage, Xiaomi is ahead with 42%, while Samsung follows with 36%. Therefore, the conversion rate from brand awareness to usage is highest for Xiaomi (54%), followed by Samsung (45%).
  • In terms of smartphone brand awareness, Xiaomi leads in top-of-mind awareness (14%) and total recall (79%), closely followed by Samsung (top-of-mind awareness – 13%, total recall – 77%). In terms of current primary usage of smartphone brands, Xiaomi is in the lead with 13%, followed closely by Samsung (12%) and Vivo (11%).
  • Users of Xiaomi and Samsung smartphones and smart devices are the most satisfied (92%), followed by Apple (91%) and Boat (90%) users.
  • In terms of smartphone satisfaction levels, OnePlus users report the highest satisfaction rate (93%), followed by Xiaomi (92%) and Apple (91%) users.
