Simon Pegg Discusses Tom Cruise’s Fearless Stunts and Insights on ‘The Boys’ Season 4

From the transition of Spaced to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Simon Pegg’s career has taken him to extraordinary places. The British actor gained worldwide recognition with his iconic zombie apocalypse rom-com Shaun of the Dead in 2004, which opened doors to unimaginable opportunities. At the world premiere of Dead Reckoning Part One in Rome, Collider’s Steve Weintraub caught up with Pegg to reflect on the early days of his career and discuss his remarkable journey since then. Weintraub and Pegg have a longstanding history of meeting at conventions and events, but before they delve into their professional conversation, Weintraub is intrigued by Pegg’s choice of attire for the premiere – a Valentino outfit. Pegg humorously explains that being in Italy, it only felt fitting to don a piece from a reputable Italian designer like Valentino.

Since their initial encounter, Pegg’s career has skyrocketed. He has starred in four Mission: Impossible and Ice Age films, portrayed Scotty in three Star Trek movies starting from 2009, collaborated on two more comedies with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost, and of course, had a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Pegg reflects on how surreal it would’ve been for his younger self to know that he would become a prominent star with major blockbuster roles, wishing he could travel back in time to share the news. He fondly remembers the beginning of his journey and how attending Comic-Con in 2004 to promote Shaun of the Dead was a thrilling experience that began shaping his trajectory. Pegg and Weintraub reminisce about watching digital cuts of Empire Strikes Back in a hotel room during that time.

Steering the conversation back to the purpose of their meeting in Rome, Weintraub asks Pegg if he captured any behind-the-scenes videos of Tom Cruise performing stunts for Dead Reckoning Part One. Although Pegg is familiar with on-screen death-defying acts, Cruise takes it to a whole new level in this film, particularly with a terrifying bike jump over a cliff followed by parachute deployment. Pegg shares that he managed to record a video of the stunt from the side and describes the mixture of fear and exhilaration among the cast as they witnessed Cruise’s risky feats. The relief they felt when Cruise emerged unharmed after each dangerous maneuver was palpable.

Moving beyond big-budget films, Pegg reveals his return for The Boys Season 4, reprising his role as Hughie’s father. Although he hasn’t been heavily involved in the series since Season 1, Pegg expresses his excitement to reunite with the cast and tease the forthcoming insanity of the show. He assures fans that The Boys will only get crazier, promising a wild ride for viewers. Pegg praises the production team and their exceptional work while confirming his involvement in four episodes of Season 4.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premieres on July 12, and fans can anticipate Pegg’s thrilling performance. For more insights into the film, check out our interview with Tom Cruise.
