Shea Whigham & Greg Tarzan Davis of Impossible 7 Discuss Insane Stunts

When a new actor joins the cast of a Mission: Impossible movie, it’s almost a guarantee that they’ll aim to perform their own daring stunts, taking inspiration from Tom Cruise himself. In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, newcomers Greg Tarzan Davis and Shea Whigham wasted no time in showcasing their skills with a thrilling chase scene in Rome, Italy. During an interview with Collider at the movie’s premiere, Whigham spoke to Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub about his impromptu driving skills in Rome, leaving Davis shocked and texting his mom in a panic, just in case something went wrong. Davis later confirmed that he was indeed terrified.

Davis explained the moment of realization when he discovered there was no stunt driver to take over the wheel as expected. The scene required them to drift and follow behind Tom Cruise, and while they were seated for dialogue, cameras were suddenly placed on the hood of the car. With a startled Davis expecting a professional stunt driver to step in, he was taken aback when Whigham confidently started driving, nearly risking his life in the process. Davis even texted his mom, putting the blame on Shea for any mishap.

Davis openly admitted to being scared during the experience, but also praised Whigham for his impressive performance. Whigham mentioned that there wasn’t much preparation for the car stunts, but his passion for driving helped him prepare. While he did his own stunt driving, there was always a stunt performer available to teach him incredible techniques.

Whigham also shed light on how Mission: Impossible successfully secures remarkable shooting locations. He mentioned that Cruise and director/screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who also serve as producers, plan and prepare the most thrilling stunts years in advance, even before the cast is finalized. This level of preparation allows for input from the cast, encouraging them to bring their ideas and creativity to the table.

Furthermore, Whigham expressed his gratitude for being able to shoot in stunning and bustling locations like the streets of Rome and the Dubai airport. He especially mentioned his fondness for the Spanish Steps in Rome due to its historical significance to his favorite poets, John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Whigham credited Cruise for his ability to make impossible requests happen, whether it’s persuading a prince or a city mayor to allow the crew to film in breathtaking locations.

While viewers have to wait a bit longer to see Whigham’s impressive driving stunts on screen, early reactions suggest that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is worth the anticipation. The film hits theaters on July 12. For more insights, check out our conversation with Tom Cruise about the movie.
