Google Plans to Establish Its Global Fintech Operations Center in Gujarat

Google, the internet giant, has revealed its plans to establish its global fintech operation centre at GIFT City in Gujarat, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. This announcement came after Pichai’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pichai also highlighted the company’s ongoing investment in India through its $10 billion India Digitisation Fund.

During his visit to the US, Prime Minister Modi met with several top CEOs, including Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Tim Cook (Apple), Sam Altman (OpenAI), and Lisa Su (AMD). Pichai expressed his excitement about the progress made by India, especially in terms of the Digital India vision and the economic opportunities it presents.

Pichai mentioned that he had previously met with the prime minister in December and shared Google’s commitment to investing $10 billion in the India Digitisation Fund. He also mentioned the company’s focus on investing in artificial intelligence and its 100-language initiative. Pichai praised Prime Minister Modi’s vision for Digital India, stating that it has become a blueprint for other countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs tweeted that Prime Minister Modi invited Pichai to explore further collaborations in the domains of artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity products and services, and mobile device manufacturing in India. They also discussed the possibility of collaboration between Google and academic institutions in India to promote research and development, as well as skill development.

In July 2020, Google had announced its plan to invest $10 billion in India over the next five to seven years. During Pichai’s visit to India in December of the same year, it was revealed that a part of the India Digitisation Fund would focus on supporting startups led by women.

Google has also embarked on various initiatives in India, such as collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science to collect speech data from districts across the country to improve language translation and search technology. Additionally, Google has provided grants for the establishment of India’s first responsible artificial intelligence center at IIT Madras and for Wadhwani AI to utilize advanced technology for better agricultural outcomes.
