‘Sharknado’ Heads to Theaters With a New ‘Barbie’ Vibe

Sharknado, the cult classic film, is making its way to theaters for the first time ever on August 15 and 16, just in time to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The Asylum, renowned for their low-budget “mockbuster” movies, is promoting the re-release of their most successful film with a creatively inspired Barbie-themed poster. When Sharknado was released back in 2013, it quickly became a viral sensation and spawned a series of increasingly silly sequels, filled with celebrity cameos, concluding with The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time in 2018.

Now, after ten years, Sharknado is making its grand debut on the big screen on August 15 and 16. Staying true to their “mockbuster” roots, The Asylum is generating excitement for this special event with a poster that pays homage to the reigning box office champion, Barbie. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that director Anthony C. Ferrante’s sharksploitation film, which surprised audiences with its popularity in 2013, will finally have its first theatrical release after initially premiering on Syfy.

The Asylum gained fame with their “mockbuster” strategy, creating low-budget films that piggybacked off the concepts of big-budget blockbusters. So, it’s fitting that they are promoting the re-release of their biggest mainstream hit with a poster that cleverly parodies Barbie. In this poster, an iconic Barbie-inspired character and her chainsaw-wielding Ken embark on a journey in their convertible, heading towards a pink tornado filled with sharks, all adorned with the recognizable Sharknado logo in Barbie’s trademark font. The trailer for the re-release promises “new kills” and “new thrills,” proudly proclaiming “more sharks, more ‘nado!” The film has undergone a complete remastering process, but it is likely that the somewhat unconvincing CGI sharks will retain their charming low-budget appeal.

What Is Sharknado?

Sharknado features Ian Ziering (known for his role in Beverly Hills: 90210) as ex-surfer Fin Shepard, and Tara Reid (famous for her role in American Pie) as his estranged wife, April. The film follows their perilous escape from Los Angeles during a once-in-a-lifetime event called a “sharknado” – a tornado that inexplicably picks up a large group of hungry sharks. Throughout the movie, well-known landmarks in LA are destroyed, and many of the supporting characters meet their demise, including the late John Heard, who portrayed a barfly. However, the main characters find solace in each other and fight off the sharks with chainsaws, rekindling their romance along the way.

Sharknado became an instant social media sensation upon its release due to its outlandish title and premise. Initially titled Dark Skies, as revealed in an interview with Collider on the set of Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, the film underwent a name change, much to the dismay of the cast. However, that initial disappointment was quickly replaced with excitement as the franchise took off. The sequels became increasingly comedic, leveraging the inherent hilarity of the premise. Celebrity cameos were also a prominent feature in the sequels, with David Hasselhoff, Bo Derek, Gilbert Gottfried, Margaret Cho, and Neil deGrasse Tyson among the notable appearances. The sixth and final installment, The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, involved time travel, magic, and a villainous cyborg version of Tara Reid. Ziering’s character, Fin Shepard, even made crossover appearances in Lavalantula, a film that combined volcanoes and giant spiders in the same “cinematic universe,” resulting in its own sequel, 2 Lava 2 Lantula.

Get ready to embark on the high-octane, shark-infested adventure of Sharknado as it hits theaters on August 15 and 16. Stay tuned for updates by keeping an eye on Collider. Don’t forget to check out the new poster and trailer below, courtesy of The Asylum.
