Season 3 signals the end of ‘Staged’ starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen

It appears that the popular series “Staged” is coming to an end, as confirmed by the main stars of the show. After three seasons of captivating audiences with their dynamic duo, the BBC production is wrapping up its storylines, allowing the cast members to explore new projects. While there was uncertainty about the future of “Staged” and whether it would return for a fourth season, it is now clear that this will not be the case. In a recent interview with “The Sun,” David Tennant explained the reasons behind ending “Staged” after its third installment.

“We’ve had a fantastic time filming the series, but we have no plans to continue. The show was born out of a specific period of time – lockdown – when we were all confined to our homes and communicating through Zoom, just like our characters in the show. But now, as depicted in some scenes of the new season, we can finally move beyond those limitations.”

“Staged” was a truly original project, featuring Tennant and Michael Sheen portraying fictionalized versions of themselves as they prepared for different theatrical productions. The challenge they faced was rehearsing these plays through video chat meetings due to the pandemic lockdown. While preparing for a stage play is already complex in person, attempting to do so through a computer or mobile device proved to be even more challenging. After three seasons of the actors having fun in a virtual world, it’s time to wrap up this innovative comedy.

Interestingly, “Staged” marked a reunion for Tennant and Sheen after their collaboration in the comedy series “Good Omens.” In “Good Omens,” they played the main characters, an angel and a demon who roam Earth while awaiting the Apocalypse. Despite originally being planned as a limited series, the overwhelming positive reception led Prime Video to produce subsequent episodes.

Additionally, fans of Tennant’s portrayal of the Doctor in “Doctor Who” will be delighted to know that he is making a comeback. As part of the series’ 60th anniversary celebrations, three special episodes will air later this year. After Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the Doctor, Tennant will briefly reprise the role in a couple of isolated adventures, setting the stage for Ncuti Gatwa’s debut as the iconic time-traveling hero. Each Doctor has left a lasting impression on fans, and Gatwa is sure to be no exception.
