Kiss, the legendary rock band performing for over half a century, is transitioning from the physical world to the digital realm. The rock band played their farewell concert, “The End of the Road, ”the final one this time, in New York over the weekend. As the band concluded its last song, they disappeared into smoke, and a few minutes later, their digital avatars were flying on the screen behind them, performing “God Gave Rock ‘n’ Roll to You.”

Kiss’ digital avatars have been created by Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas’, the creator of Star Wars, a special effects company, in partnership with Pophouse Entertainment Group. The two had collaborated before for the “Abba Voyage,” a concert where the digital avatars of the Swedish band performed in London.
During the band’s performance earlier this year, the members wore motion capture suits to have their digital characters created.
These are not just digital replicas of the band members of Kiss- Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, and Eric Singers, but are interpretations of them as fantasy-based superheroes. “These four individuals already have superpowers. We want to be as open as possible,” said Pophouse CEO Per Sundin.
This technology used by Kiss allows them to preserve their legacy forever, or as the Starchild say, they have become “immortal.” Sundin adds that with this technology, Kiss could potentially perform concerts in three different cities, across three different continents on the same night.
The band first staged their farewell tour in 2001, though they have continued to tour regularly over the years. While this is the final goodbye from the ‘physical’ rock band, they will be coming back in their digital forms. However, the band has not revealed their plans for these avatars yet. Sundin said, “We’ll decide after the tour. Will it be a Kiss concert, a rock opera, a musical, a story, or an adventure?”
