Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia to mandate USB-C charging for all electronic devices

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will begin implementing the use of USB Type-C as the standard charging port for all mobile phones and electronic devices starting in 2025. Gulf News has reported that this decision is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the user experience, improving charging and data transfer technology, and promoting environmental sustainability by reducing electronic waste.

Timeline for Saudi Arabia’s USB-C Mandate
The mandate will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, starting on January 1, 2025, will cover devices such as mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable gaming devices, headphones, earphones, amplifiers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems, portable speakers, and wireless routers. The second phase, beginning on April 1, 2026, will include laptops. Companies are required to ship products with USB Type-C charging standards to comply with the mandate.

Reasons behind Saudi Arabia’s Mandate
According to the report, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, along with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, have announced the mandatory stages of this transition. These departments emphasize that the directive aims to enhance the user experience without imposing additional costs. In addition, Saudi Arabia claims that this move will reduce annual domestic consumption of charging equipment by over 2.2 million units, resulting in savings of 170 million Saudi Riyals ($45.3 million) for consumers. Furthermore, this transition is aligned with the kingdom’s environmental goals, as it will contribute to a reduction of nearly 15 tons of electronic waste per year.
The Significance of USB Type-C
USB Type-C is the universal standard for wired connection of smart devices. It is an industry-standard connector capable of transmitting both data and power through a single cable. USB-C ports also offer faster charging speeds and higher data transfer rates.
