Samsung takes the top smartphone brand, Xiaomi slips to third in India

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR)’s India mobile handset market review report, smartphone shipments in India decreased by 6% year-on-year in Q2 2023.

Leading the smartphone market in Q2 2023 were Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Value-for-money phones accounted for 72% of the market share but experienced a 16% decline in shipments compared to the previous year. On the other hand, affordable phones priced below Rs 7000 saw a 51% year-on-year growth, while premium phones grew by 9%. Super-premium and uber-premium categories showed remarkable growth rates of 95% and 133% year-on-year respectively, contributing to a 17% increase in the average selling price of smartphones.

Samsung held the top position in the smartphone market with an 18% market share. It also dominated the premium smartphone segment (INR 25,000-INR 50,000) with a 27% share.

Vivo closely followed with a 15% market share. The 5G smartphone shipments of Vivo were primarily driven by the vivo T1, vivo T1 Pro, vivo V23e, and vivo Y75 5G models, which accounted for 48% of its total 5G shipments.

Xiaomi ranked third with a 15% share in the smartphone market. The top three models from Xiaomi were the Redmi 12C, Redmi A2, and Redmi A1+. Poco, a sub-brand of Xiaomi, experienced a 19% year-on-year growth in shipments.

Realme climbed to the fourth position with a market share of 12%. However, its shipments witnessed a 30% decline compared to the previous year. The top three models shipped by Realme were the Realme C55, Realme N53, and Realme Narzo N55.

OPPO held the fifth position with a market share of 10%. Its top three shipped models were the OPPO A16e, OPPO A16k, and OPPO F21 Pro 5G.

OnePlus recorded a notable 125% year-on-year growth in smartphone shipments. The OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite, Nord CE 2 Lite, and Nord CE 2 accounted for 75% of its smartphone shipments.

Apple captured a 5% market share in the smartphone market during Q2 2023, showing a significant year-on-year increase of 62% in its shipments. Apple was the top contributor in the premium segment (>INR 25,000) with a 25% share.

The Transsion Group brands, including Itel, Infinix, and Tecno, witnessed an overall increase of 41% year-on-year in shipments (including smartphones and feature phones). Tecno and Infinix recorded 46% and 38% year-on-year growth in market shipments, respectively.

Based on CMR’s projections, the smartphone market is expected to experience growth in the second half of the year, resulting in a single-digit increase in overall shipments for the year. The festive season in Q3 is anticipated to drive a rise in smartphone shipments.

Menka Kumari, an analyst from CyberMedia Research, predicts that the market will rebound due to increased consumer spending and the emergence of 5G and foldable phone technology.
